The objective of the current study was to examine the factor structure, convergent and discriminative validity of a Korean version of the Posttraumatic Cognitions Inventory(K-PTCI). Data were collected from 240 traumatized undergraduate students for its factor structure, 151 those for its convergent validity, and 85 those for its discriminative validity. Unexpectedly, confirmatory factor analyses revealed that all of the three-factor models reported in earlier studies provided a poor fit to the current data. Exploratory factor analyses yielded 5 factors: negative self-concept about future/values, negative beliefs about others and the world, self-blame, negative self-concept about traumatic reactions, and negative self-concept about coping abilities. The entire scale of the K-PTCI and all of its five subscales showed good internal consistency. All of the K-PTCI scales significantly correlated with measures of posttraumatic negative beliefs, posttraumatic stress disorder(PTSD), depression, and anxiety symptoms, and except for the self-blame subscale, the other scales still significantly correlated with the severity of PTSD symptoms even after controlling for depressive or anxiety symptoms. All of the K-PTCI scales discriminated well between traumatized undergraduates with and without PTSD. In conclusion, these results suggest that the K-PTCI is a reliable, valid tool to assess general and specific aspects of trauma-related negative cognitions.
